Western Initiatives

In our efforts to build an inclusive student community and to support students from underrepresented groups, Western offers a range of scholarships, bursaries, and need-based awards.

Below are the Western initiatives to financially support and foster diversity at Western: 

Admission Scholarships for Black Students

Offered to outstanding secondary school students admitted directly from high school to an undergraduate program at Western Main campus who self-identify as Black: 

President’s Entrance Scholarship for Black Students

These scholarships are part of the National scholarship program and an application is required. For the National Scholarship application click here.

The National Scholarship application will have a self-identification section.

Admission Scholarships for Indigenous Students

National Indigenous Scholarships

Offered to incoming Indigenous undergraduate students (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) based on their outstanding academic excellence and contributions. An application is required. For more information click here.

Neen Hodgins Indigenous Continuing Admission Scholarship

This scholarship is offered to a student entering the first year in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities based on the admission average. To be considered self-identification is required. Students can self-identify through the Indigenous Student Self-Identification Survey.

Youth in Extended Society Care

Funding offered to students who grew up in the care of the Canadian Children’s Aid Society that covers tuition and books. For more information click here

Scholarships for Globally Displaced Students

Scholarships offered to support students facing disruption and displacement due to conflict or war in their home countries. For more information click here

Afghan Student Refugee Scholarship

Scholarships offered to support student refugees from Afghanistan. For more information click here

Project Hero Scholarship

Scholarships offered to undergraduate full-time students in a first-entry degree program who are the sons and daughters of Canadian military killed while serving in an active mission. For more information click here

Bursaries & Work Study

Western University has a robust Financial Aid program that helps students from low income families overcome financial barriers and food insecurity to succeed academically at Western.  Costs considered include tuition and ancillary fees, residence fees, rent, food, books & equipment, and more.  Assistance is provided through awards, bursaries, and the Work-Study program.  

To be considered for financial assistance, students need to complete an online Financial Assistance Application.  Only one application is required for the academic year and students have the opportunity to complete an application every year of their studies. To apply, Log into your Student Center, and click Student Financials > Financial Aid and Funding > Apply for Financial Assistance > Click here to Apply for Financial Assistance to access the application. When completing the application, students will have an opportunity to self-identify as Black, Indigenous and as a First Generation student.

First Generation Bursary

Available to first-generation students with financial need. To be considered, students need to self-identify as first-generation by submitting an online Financial Assistance Application. Find more information here.

Out of province guarantee

Available to domestic students from outside of Ontario with financial need. Find more information here.

Bursaries for Indigenous students

Available to Indigenous students with financial need. To be considered, students need to self-identify as Indigenous while submitting the online Financial Assistance Application.  

Bursaries for Black students

Available to Indigenous students with financial need. To be considered, students need to self-identify as Black while submitting the online Financial Assistance Application.
